Tailbone Pain (Coccydynia)

Coccydynia is pain in or around the area of the coccyx, also called the tailbone. The coccyx is composed of 2 to 4 vertebrae at the very bottom of the spine.

What causes coccydynia? Most often, the cause of coccydynia is unknown. Other causes include trauma (for example, from backward falls or childbirth); abnormal, excessive mobility of the tailbone; and – very rarely – infection, tumor, or fracture. Its pain can be relatively severe and persistent.

What are the symptoms of coccydynia? The classic symptom is pain when pressure is applied to the tailbone, such as when sitting on a hard chair. Symptoms usually improve with relief of pressure when standing or walking.
