Frozen Shoulder

Laser Therapy, A Painless, Non-Surgical Option for Frozen Shoulder

Shoulder PainIf you’ve ever suffered from shoulder pain, then you know how unbearable it can be to live with.  Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is one type of shoulder condition that causes substantial pain and loss of movement in the shoulder joint.  Frozen shoulder is the result of inflammation, scarring and a reduction of the capsule that surrounds the normal shoulder joint. When the capsule thickens, the shoulder becomes painful and the bones are unable to move freely in the joint. Over time, tasks as simple as putting on a coat or reaching above your head can be very painful and difficult.

Generally there is no cause for frozen shoulder, although it most commonly affects patients 40 years of age and older.  People with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes are also at a greater risk.

Finally, Conservative and Long Lasting Treatment for Shoulder Pain

Until recently, treatment for frozen shoulder involved a variety of interventions, including oral medications, injection therapy, aggressive surgery and ongoing rehabilitation. According to a recent study by the BMJ Sports Medicine Journal, many of these commonly used interventions lack evidence of effectiveness, reporting slow healing time and short-term results. One treatment, however, Laser Therapy (LLLT) showed strong evidence for effectively and non-invasively treating frozen shoulder pain and restoring mobility—without pain, without drugs and with lasting results.

A new more powerful form of LLLT, called MLS Laser Therapy, is a new technology that offers a non-intrusive option to more invasive interventions like surgery.  The laser works by penetrating deeply into the skin with no heating effect or potential tissue damage, and works by restoring the abnormal cellular function to promote natural healing.  Treatment times vary for each patient, but in general actual laser exposure lasts only a few minutes per treatment.

Dr. Kollias is currently the only physician in Tampa who utilizes MLS Laser Therapy to successfully treat chronic pain caused by a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.  Several patients with frozen shoulder have had tremendous success in relieving their chronic pain and regaining full motion in their shoulder in significantly less time than other alternative treatment methods.
